I adopted a cute lil' November birthstone fetus from Fetusmart! Hooray fetus!

Chasing Pavements

2009-08-09 - 6:45 p.m.

Listening to Discovery do "Osaka Loop Line"--- lovely elegant electronica recommended by Miss Ginny at ginny_mccoo. Lovely travel music. And, yes, I do miss being on subways this afternoon, changing trains amidst crowds and signs in unknown languages. I agree with Miss Ginny on that: I loved being In Transit. Aerodromes and subways, metro rail and airport cafes, hotel rooms in new cities--- I do love all that. I love dashing through airports with my carry-on and the first minutes of coming out of a subway or off a shuttle bus and being in a new world. There was a time in my life when I knew the best hot dog kiosks in all the major airports on the East Coast--- and there will be a time again when lovely wicked companions and I will know all the best airport bars in Europe and Japan.

I'm drinking vodka and Red Bull this afternoon. I like the taste, mind you. Of course...vodka and sugar-free Red Bull? There is that nagging fear that I'm secretly turning into Lindsay Lohan.

Britt-Nicole always said that she was Lindsay and I was Samantha. Well, the lovely green-eyed Laura prefers that neither of us be Lindsay. My lovely leggy opera girl in Birmingham much prefers that she and I be Margot and Richie Tenenbaum. She'd love to be Margot Tenenbaum--- to come off a bus with Nico's "These Days" playing, gaunt and mysterious and kohl-eyed. And I'd be Richie for her any day. Which of course means that Laura and I must spend many a day exploring obscure corners of the Museum of Natural History in NYC.

Laura does have rather a crush on Miss Ginny. Laura is a girl who falls in love with writing. I do the same. Miss Ginny at ginny_mccoo told me earlier this summer that she'd love to come to Savannah and marry me, to dance at a dive bar along River Street in a white lace Sixties-style wedding mini-dress. (Mandy Moore did it with Ryan Adams, and Miss Ginny and I both want Mandy) And Laura tells me that she and I must marry at the registry office in Tallinn and then drunkenly tell everyone at bars in Tallinn Old Town that I was her former stepfather, whom she'd stolen away from her mother--- or just tell everyone that we were siblings like Richie and Margot. The idea, I think, is to do both. Marry Miss Ginny in Savannah, with Laura there standing at the wedding...and then have Miss Ginny stand as witness in Tallinn while Laura and I marry. (What would the title be--- Best Girl? Maid of Honour? Laura thinks Slut of Honour is perfect...) And then we'd fly to Barcelona. Spain recognises same-sex marriage, and Laura and Miss Ginny would marry there while I stood as Best Man (or Best Evil Older Predator). Triple play, after all--- perfect. We none of us take marriage as an institution seriously, and I certainly don't take the legalities seriously. First marriage trumps, legally--- the second two, whichever they'd be, are absolutely null. But I think we'd all three be blithely unconcerned. It's the triple play that's key.

I do have to get Miss Ginny to tell me all about the backstory of her possible Kenya trip. However did it come up? Who would she be going with? Lamu in Kenya--- beach resort town, though in a Muslim area, so no suntanning topless... And I have to get her to tell me all about her hotel weekend--- Slash Cafe and Kaizen Sushi in Montreal, Icelandic Reyka vodka, hotel terrace nights. Is there a lover involved? Miss Ginny remains deliciously mysterious...

Favourite cities--- London for Miss Ginny, Paris for Laura, NYC and Vienna for me. I love new cities--- and I'll always need lovely bookish reclusive dangerously-younger train-wrecky girls to see the world with. I have a passport and a laptop and a carry-on. I'll go anywhere with someone who wants to see the world with me, who wants me to be the Older Lover in her films in the head.

Laura called me at 0400 this morning--- back from dive bars in Birmingham. Too many kamikazes, but lots of dancing to covers of the Doors and Johnny Cash and the Beatles. We talked 'til something like 0700... I'm attached to her voice and her smile and her sense of romance and wickedness and delight... Cities and places and lives: I do want her with me.

And I need to hear from the Designated L-Girl in Montreal about her PhD thesis and about Kenya...and about hotel terraces. And I will tell her that I want her to be Dr. Ginny...and get to visit Kenya.
